Well – this year’s triathlon was a first! Extreme winds and churning seas meant that the cycle leg had to be cancelled for safety reasons and the swim turned into a wade. There was no doubt in the organiser’s mind that safety had to come first and anyone there on the day will, I’m sure, have supported the decision.

But cancellation wasn’t an option. To make sure that the words “challenge” and Perran Tri remain synonymous the event started with a gruelling beach run of around 2 miles over the windswept cliff path to Perran Sands, followed by a strength sapping wade through mountainous seas back to the transition zone. Then, just for good measure, a “jog” to Penhale Sands – at least another 4 miles of leg sucking sandblasting action in high velocity winds before that final dash to the finish line.

In what was perhaps the most challenging conditions yet in the history of this event, a hard-core group of 7 -15 year old athletes took on the thundering surf at Perranporth and followed that with a tough race along and around the beach to cross the finish line and turn in some quite amazing performances.

Setting off in three waves, boys and girls combined battled it out and in another first for the event, it was a young lady from Gyllyngvase Surf Lifesaving Club that crossed the finish line in first – surely a young woman to watch for future events!

It’s all for a good cause! SEXWAXSNAPS were delighted to be called in at short notice to cover the inaugural St.Mawe’s Nearwater Triathlon. The lovechild of Tim and Amelia Whitaker who run the the Nearwater “boutique style” B&B in the village, this “sprint’ event not only provided the contestants with a great day’s race but helped raise funds for “Help For Heroes“. As you can see, there were some hardcore competitors taking part plus a full blown Army General handing out the prizes!

This year, there was a fair sized swell and some choppy surf with a strong southerly breeze that had a lot of swimmers struggling to avoid drifting off the first can. For some, the swim proved too much to handle … better luck next time!

The sea conditions were such that the swim section was downgraded to a wade for safety considerations!
